I live in Ogimi. A small village on the northern tip of Okinawa. We have more people over one hundred years old here than almost anywhere on earth.

The researchers come. They study our fish. Our sweet potatoes. Our green tea. They write their papers and they leave.

But there is something they always seem to miss.

Look at our teeth.

I am 84. My wife is 81. Between us we have lost not a single tooth. My neighbour Yoshio is 91 — he still eats whole fish. My friend Shiki is 88, and he has never sat in a dentist’s chair for anything more than a cleaning.

This is not unusual here. This is just normal.

People always ask me what we eat. What we drink. How we move. Nobody ever asks what we brush with.

The thing nobody asks about

In Japan, for as long as I can remember, our toothpaste has contained a mineral called hydroxyapatite.

It is the same mineral your teeth are made from.
